She was a runner-up in The Ginkgo Prize for Ecopoetry (2018) and has been shortlisted for The Bridport Prize (2018) and The Aesthetica Creative Writing Award (2018).
Ella’s recording was made along with the other winners of the Foyle Young Poet of the Year. Talking about the experience of winning the prize and making a recording for the Poetry Archive Ella said:
“I lingered over the Foyle submission page right up to the deadline. It was my first time entering a poetry competition and I remember feeling completely overwhelmed. So when I received the letter saying I’d won, I was in shock. Suddenly, poetry become much more than just a hobby. The award gave me the confidence and self-belief to call myself a writer.
I am now studying for an MA in Creative & Life Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London whilst working towards my first pamphlet. I have had work accepted by The Rialto and The Poetry Salzburg Review and believe that all of this was kickstarted by Foyle.
I was thrilled to be asked to record a selection of poems for the Poetry Archive. There is such intimacy in hearing a poet read their own work, so being on the other side of this was an absolute joy.”
The Foyle Young Poets’ Recording took place on 23rd October 2018 at the Soundhouse Studio, Acton, West London.
The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is sponsored by the Foyle Foundation and run by the Poetry Society. This Poetry Archive collection has been supported by Garfield Weston.
