Grandad’s Song for Grandma

I have come over to France from England where we like to dance
the Morris dance, a different dance, from dances I have seen you doing.
I’m so glad I’ve had the chance to see the way in which you dance
‘glad’ don’t really sum it up, I’d gladly spend the summer queuing.
You can move me from stagnation any time of any day.
You improve me, when my smile
is miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles away.
You can make me feel I’m zoomy when I’m catacomby.
You can make my trials seem like –

If I’d, listen, if I’d – If I’d wanted percussion… [laughter] It’s good that you’re keen but just be quietly keen in this instance.

You can make me feel I’m zoomy when I’m catacomby.
You can make my trials seem like they’re a trifle
When it seems the world would stifle, you can make me Eiffel
I am very happy to report.
You can make it all seem thrilling,
you are the full shilling,
you’re fulfilling my existence
thank you kindly.
You can make me feel I’m conger, when I feel no longer
than a maggot that is very short.
You can put flavour in my flan,
can can put body in my bran.
Can we be one woman and man?
Please do say ‘oui’
so that we can
begin
to plan
what we can do,
me and un can-
-ny you.

About Grandad’s Song for Grandma

In 1904 my grandfather was to meet my grandmother in Paris: my grandfather an Englishman from Rochester, my grandmother a Parisian dancer with the Folies Bergere. And Grandad came over, fell for my Grandma, and this is a song he might have sung to her after having seen her dance a few times and knowing that she was the woman for him. So 'Grandad's Song for Grandma':
